How to Teach a Furry Friend Its Name

Here are tips that will help you in training your puppy to know his name.

1. Get His Attention

Since you are just starting, make sure to begin the process without distractions coming from other animals or people.

Find a good spot in your home where you and your puppy can do the training. Do not forget his treats for easy training.

Keep in mind that you should not train if your puppy is distracted, excited or tired. In training, say your dog’s name in a pleasant and happy voice. If you do not get any response, try it again using a kissing noise.

2. Mark and Give Reward

The time he gives you his attention, mark it with “Good” or “Yes”. After that, do not forget to his reward because this will be your key for your puppy to get his attention and look at you when you are calling his name.

The treat is a great help for you because each time he looks at you, you need to give him his reward to pay attention.

3. Try it Again

If you are successful in getting his attention, try it again. Repeat the process and do not forget to give him a reward and praise him with his treat.

If for instance he does not pay attention, do the kissing noise or clap your hands. The kissing noise perhaps be a good training for him if he does not listen to you when you call his name.

4. Chasing Game

If your furry friend is energetic, he will easily be distracted which requires more chasing games in getting his attention.

Puppies like to chase, so when you begin running, ensure that he will chase you. While doing it, call his name using a lively voice. If he does not pay attention, use treats.

After calling your dog’s name, be sure that he will catch you by using praise or giving him treats. After that, increase the chase and stop running, then say his name.

Do not forget that you should not continue the training for hours because he gets tired. This is not a good sign because he will not have the energy listening or paying attention to you.

5. Repeat

Just go on with the steps and repeat it for five to ten times for some minutes. Do not overdo it because your puppy might get bored and the effectiveness of the training will be useless.

Repeat 1-4 steps after 2 to 3 hours for a few days. Your pet will soon realize that his name is fun. Just do not forget that the treats are essential for him to pay attention to.

6. Change the Location

If your dog comes to you when you call his name, then this is the time to change the place where you do the training. Be sure that you pick certain places having minimal distractions so that your pup will not have a hard time.

You can start practicing in different rooms or any place that you think he will be comfortable with. Choose a place where there is enough space where he can roam around or do some things he wants.

7. Increase Distractions and Time Interval

Since your puppy is already aware with his name when calling him, this is the time to make it hard.

You can do it by increasing some distractions as well as time interval when your pup gives his attention to you. Make sure to call his name, wait for a couple of seconds, then, give his treat.

When you finally easily get his attention, you can start increasing some distractions around him. You can play music or get a partner to play with him.

If he is completely distracted, try to call his name. If he pays attention and looks at you, give him a reward. If not, you need to think of another game.

You can put a leash on him to avoid wandering. Bear in mind that there are other rewards you can give to him such as chicken strips, beef bones and others in getting his attention.

Do not forget that when he gives his attention, you are making him thinks that he is doing a great job.

8. Go Outside

Since your dog looks at you when calling his name even though there are distractions, you can try the training outside. You can begin somewhere quiet or a place where he has been.

Start with the basic exercises in getting his attention and give him reward. After that, slowly increase the training. Increasing the training will help him a lot so that he will be focus and soon realize that it is part of the process.

9. Get Rid of the Treats

This is the time to get rid of the treats or rewards. Your pup is already associated with his name using treats and praise.

The next step that you need to do is to begin offering him a few treats. Try calling his name without any treat. If he looks at you when you call his name, praise him rather than giving him treats.

Conclusion

There you go the easy steps in training your puppy to get his name. The steps are your key for easy learning and to get his attention without much difficulty.

Be sure to follow it completely so that your dog will not have a hard time learning his name and easily get attached to it.
