There are different ways that dogs show their affection towards people, it can be by wagging their tails, barking affectionately, or jumping on someone.
Though our dogs do not mean any of these behaviors in a bad way, they can lead to untoward events if left unchecked. In this article, we will look at how allowing your dog to jump on you can influence how your dog interacts with people.
Jumping on people is a dog behavior that shows how happy they are to see their dog parent.
It is even looked at as an adorable and endearing trait of a dog, but if you have a big dog with long nails, this can lead to injury and may cause people to be afraid to approach your dog.
This article will provide tips on how this behavior can be corrected in a way that your dog learns how to properly acknowledge people instead of automatically jumping on them.
Your dog jumping on your when you get home after work can seem harmless, but by allowing this behavior,, you’re reinforcing the idea that it’s ok for your dog to jump on people, which means he thinks it’s ok to jump on anyone.
Even if your dog is small, his jumping could cause injury, especially to small children or anyone who has an issue with balance. How do you make it stop? Keep reading for some tips to make your dog stop jumping on people.
Don’t Allow Him to Jump On You
This one may hurt a bit in the beginning, but you can’t allow your dog to jump on you when you get home. I know you like getting their enthusiastic greeting, but if you’re serious about stopping your dog from jumping, that has to include you.
When you get home and your dog starts jumping on you, ignore him. Don’t encourage him in any way. The calmer you are, the calmer your dog will be. So completely ignore him. Don’t pet his head, don’t push him away, don’t do anything.
Just ignore him and continue with your just-got-home routine. You can even practice by going out the door and back in a few times, ignoring your dog each time he jumps on you.
Ignoring our beloved and cute dogs can be a difficult task at the beginning but this is essential.
Dogs learn by repeating behaviors, if you smile when they jump on you, then this would mean that this behavior is acceptable, but if you choose to ignore them, then this will tell them that it is not okay and will help them learn to stop doing this when you arrive.
Consistency is also important with dog training, as a dog parent, you should consistently ignore them when you arrive home, and only acknowledge them when they have calmed down.
This would also help them learn proper manners when dealing with other visitors, and then they will learn how to naturally calm down when they interact with people instead of jumping on them.
Get Your Dog to Sit
Once you’re in the house and your dog has calmed down, give him the “sit” command. Once he complies, then you can reward him with petting and attention. Make sure everyone in the house is consistent with this.
This is one of the basic commands that our dogs should learn and should consistently perform when asked.
Sitting dogs are calm and behaved, this is how they should react when they see people, and then, only play with them when they are calm, instead of playing with them while they are overly excited.
Because this will develop into a habit and will make your dogs feel that it is okay to be overly excited and will not help them change their habit.
Allowing your dogs to sit and remain calm will also allow them to control their emotions instead of being overpowered by them. This part of their training should be consistently observed until it comes naturally.

If You’re Sitting
If your dog has a tendency to jump on you while you’re sitting in a chair, remove him the next time he does it and put him back on the floor. Stand up if you have to and wait until he’s calm and still on the floor. Then you can give him attention.
It is very important that your dog learns what behavior is correct and what behavior is incorrect, since you are the master and leader in the eyes of your dog, you should lead them well, by only giving them the attention that they want when they are calm and behave and not jumping on you.
Do this properly, and make sure that you do not hurt your dog when you remove him. It should be clear that you are not angry at them, but instead, you are teaching them that the action of jumping on you, is incorrect and should be done, and you will not tolerate it.
Stop Him Jumping on Other People
Get a good friend to help with this. Have your dog sit before your friend approaches. Once he’s sitting, then ask your friend to come near. Tell your friend that if the dog stands up or breaks sit, your friend is to turn and walk away.
Have your dog sit again. Repeat this until your dog remains in the sitting position as your friend approaches, then reward him for it.
Tell anyone who stops by to do the same thing we mentioned above. If your dog begins to jump on them, they are to ignore the dog and walk away. Don’t talk to the dog, push the dog away, or in any way acknowledge them.
You can also put your dog in a different room or use his leash to keep him in a different area than you and your friends are in.
Conclusion
Dogs are like children, they adapt and learn what they see. If you tolerate jumping on you, then this means that this behavior is okay.
As early as their puppy years, teach them that they should be calm and relaxed and not overly excited because an overly excited dog can harm other people and might be harmful to other animals as well.
During the training, your dog should not feel alienated, but instead, make them feel that you are teaching them as their dog parent and doing this training for their own good.
Like all training, this will take some practice to get right, but don’t give up. Your dog can learn not to jump on people, and this in turn will make your home much more pleasant. So just be patient and soon you’ll have a well-behaved dog!
During the training do not forget to reward your dog for good behavior. Other than being well-behaved, we want your dog to be happy and healthy as well.

In regards to the jumping on people, we have tried telling people to turn their back on the dog and ignore her. It makes her stop jumping but then she barks at them to acknowledge her and we can’t get that to stop. Any suggestions?
