There are many aspects included in basic dog obedience training. Getting your dog to sit, stay, or lie down, has been proven to help not just in behaving towards you or in front of other people, but also their relationship with other dogs as well.
Getting your dog to greet visitors properly will be a welcome relief and show how well-behaved your dog is, and keep your visitors worry-free for overly-excited or aggressive dog. Especially for guests who are not necessarily fond of dogs, getting your dog to greet properly will set the right tone for every visitor going to your home.
Dog trainings can be professionally, as there are professional dog trainers and dog obedience classes where you can enlist your dog. This can also be done by you, being his ‘master’ and ‘leader’ and his obedience will be towards directly you already.
Knowing that guests are arriving should not entail any other additional stresses, especially not an unpleasant situation involving a close friend and your beloved dog.
Keep these tips handy and train your dog with these easy steps as you train him in ways a well-behaved dog should – a dog loved not just by you, but your friends and guests as well.

Step 1 : Dampen his aggression and alertness whenever there is knocking on the door or the doorbell rings
Like most things that will pique your dog’s curiosity, instinct or aggression, you can desensitize his initial reaction so you can get better control of his succeeding actions. A knock on the door or when the doorbell rings will trigger a dogs reaction – whether a friendly over-excitement or a cautionary aggression.
Getting your door to ‘deaden’ his senses or not mind the doorbell ringing is a milestone in dog training. You can achieve this over repeated training of a controlled environment.
First, put a leash on your dog and ask someone to knock on the door or ring the doorbell. Immediately, upon the knock, tug on the leash and instruct your dog not to bark. This should come as your dog even attempts to react. Once he follows, order him to sit, and give him a reat – as you would during usual dog obedience or conditioning exercise. Regularly train him in this setup.
Once he is trained on this, follow-through when your dog is off the leash. This way, tugging the leash will no longer be a controlling aspect but your command and his trained behavior will determine his reaction. When he’s off the leash and desensitized to a knock or ringing doorbell, you are well on your way to a proper greeting by your dog of your guests.
Step 2 : Train your dog where to sit
Your home is of course, also your dog’s home. So while most areas are unrestricted and he can sit wherever he pleases in your living room, knowing where he should sit and behave whenever there are guests would be a new situation for him altogether.
But now that your dog isn’t completely bothered with a knock or door bell ringing anymore, he is now calmer and should therefore be able to not show over-excitement nor aggression, and easily follow where you want him to sit.
When you step out and once you return, do not immediately reciprocate your dogs excitement but rather show him (point!) where you want him to sit. Once he is on his place, give him a treat and acknowledge his actions. Like other trainings, continue doing this until you are satisfied that he can now sit where you want him to whenever someone comes through the door.

Step 3 : Train your dog where to sit when actual guests arrive
As you were the one who trained your dog to sit on his designated place, it is natural for him to be obedient to you but as the purpose is for him to greet guests nicely, you can now try and see if this behavioral training would continue even with other people.
Once your dog knows his ‘spot’ whenever you come through the door, you can now train him with a friend to know where his spot is when other people arrive. Have your friend come over and tell him to just not mind the dog. Once your dog sits on his place, have your friend or ‘guest’ give your dog a treat and have him acknowledge your dogs behavior.
This way, your dog would be trained to know that this behavior is expected not just with you but with your guests as well. Then, leave the room and just leave your guest. Command your dog not to follow you. When he is trained this way, he would know that he cannot just go roam around the whole time with you and that he should just sit still on his designated spot.
Step 4 : Practice and continue training when more guests arrive
Your dog greeting you nicely should not be all that different as with all or other guests. Once you’ve trained him to sit still on his spot until he is called upon, you can continue this are more guests arrive. This can be a different scenario as there are more people that he would be excited (or aggressive) towards.
Being in front of one guest is different from having your dog react when more people arrive and your dog would react to each and every behavior and action they would have towards him.
Having your dog greet your guests nicely is a welcome treat to everyone. This is one dog training aspect that can benefit not just you and your dog, but your dogs relationship to your guests as well.
The benefits of having a calm dog greet your guests will affect not just those interactions but alter your dogs behavior towards other situations as well and keep a well-mannered demeanor at all times in your household.
