Everyone knows that having a dog for a pet will have you (at least for some time) on your toes. These little critters are just big bundles of energy that seems like it never runs out. There are times that it feels like they’re awake all day until they crash and fall asleep.
It’s a good thing that there is one easy solution for this: exercise. It doesn’t even have to be that complicated! Owners can take their canine companions out on a quick trip to the beach, or even just a simple jog around the block to help them release some of that extra energy.
However, it might be a little too difficult for some pet parents. They were probably the ones who were still novices in having a canine companion in their own home, while some don’t really know what do or they simply do not care.
Below are some of the most efficient strategies to calm a high energy dog.
1. Enroll your fur babies in some classes
Owners can do so much with their pups! There’s a variety of courses that dogs can take: obedience class, agility class, and scent detection, to name a few. Owners can check out which classes they and their fur baby enjoy the most and even join in on the fun.
It’s not only a way for their dogs to burn some of that energy off, but it’s also a fantastic way to form an even stronger connection. Although this might be expensive, dog parents will always know that it’s worth the money, especially if they don’t have the time to train their own dogs themselves.

2. Mental exercise is still exercise
Pet parents exercising with their furry friends is excellent–and it’s an easy way to keep them happy. However, it’s not the only way to exercise with them. Mental stimulation is just as effective in draining off that extra energy as physical exercise does.
Owners can take at least ten minutes every day to do training sessions, and it doesn’t even have to be that hard! Pet parents can start with some of the more straightforward tricks: shake or sit. 3. Use interactive dog toys
As much as owners want to, it’s hard to stay with their fur baby all the time. Well, interactive dog toys are here so that your pet can still get some mental exercise even if you’re not there! There are puzzle toys and treat dispensers out there that are bound to capture your furry friend’s attention.
There’s nothing to worry about as well; they’ll be able to figure it out. The only thing is that this type of toys can be a little expensive. Owners should keep in mind that toys don’t have to be fancy, as even a chew toy can help drain some of that energy.

4. Just like their owners, fur babies also need jobs
Some breeds of dogs just have higher energy than others. Most of these critters were bred to work, so giving them jobs can make them both happy and satisfied. These jobs can be like the classes mentioned earlier, or even something new that’s constructive.
Owners can have their pets bringing them newspapers or also have them clean up their toys themselves. It’s absolutely a win-win situation–the pet has something to do to burn off energy, and the owner’s home gets cleaned at the same time.
5. Aromatherapy helps as well
Like their human companions, fur babies also relax when smelling a particular scent. As the popularity of essential oils rises, more and more people (and pet owners!) find out the many benefits of using them.
Now, some essential oils are safe and work great for canine companions, but some are highly dangerous. Owners should keep this in mind and talk with a veterinarian before using these oils.
Additionally, dogs have highly sensitive noses, which, when combined with bad smells, can be detrimental instead of therapeutic to dogs.
6. Like a human companion, like fur baby
Some pet owners might have noticed when they’re happy, so are their pups. When they’re sad, their pups always seem to know something’s off. Dogs can easily feed off their owner’s moods and energy. Chances are, if the owner has high energy, then so will their pet.
The solution is quite simple: owners should act relaxed and mild when interacting with their pets. In fact, some research shows that dogs are just as smart as a two-year-old. Talking and behaving calmly can rub off on your pets, so try it out!
7. Take note that canine manners matter
Dogs can learn good manners. Out there, a lot of canine companions may look like high energy dogs, but they probably don’t have good manners — some reverse the situation and drag their owners by the leash, or dogs that jump all over anyone.
It’s embarrassing for the owner, but luckily, it’s easy to fix. A canine companion that’s learned to sit patiently and wait until called compared to another that leaps around doing what it wants is a big difference. Time spent with fur babies to work on proper manners is time well spent.
8. Recognize when your pups are calm
An owner needs to know and realize when their puppy is calm. Most of the time, owners don’t reward their canine companions when they’re behaving calmly. It’s something to remember: by rewarding your pups, they learn that you like what they’re doing.
Also, use the sixth tip mentioned earlier, act calm when rewarding them. If owners do this enough times, your dog will recognize that this is proper behavior. It’s another form of training, so owners should know to give out the rewards a lot early on, but cut back as soon as their pups begin to learn.
